I recently read an article in the NYTimes that said it is becoming much more common for couples to prefer to sleep in two separate beds, or even two different bedrooms.

This is being seen most clearly in the preferences of people who are building custom homes and condominiums. They want double bedrooms, or bedrooms with extra sleeping alcoves. Some are even requesting an entire extra room.

The reason given apparently has nothing to do with sex either. Its all about sleep. People are having trouble sleeping next to one another, whether it is because of snoring, different sleep hours, or restlessness.

I can really understand this. I like having my own room in bed when I sleep. I like being able to toss and turn, and do whatever I want.

Not to get me wrong, I do enjoy snuggling. But all night every night can be a bit smothering.

Even worse, I like the privacy of separate bedrooms. Its not that I want the freedom to cheat or do anything underhanded, how much could I get away with 10 feet away in the same house? Instead I simply think that each person, if they can afford it, should have their own private space where they can just be them.

I welcome you all to fight vehemently with me over this.

I can't agree more. Separate bedrooms, and maybe even separate houses for spouses!

that is rediculous. If you love someone you want to be with them, to hold them at night, and wake up next to them in the morning.

that doesnt make any sense. Why get married if you dont wanna sleep with the person. Better to just stay single and hook up whenever you want

I guess I can see where there might be intimacy issues, and its not for everyone. However I feel like if your love is strong, it can stand up to a little me-time every once in a while. Even if that me time is at night while sleeping

sleeping together is part of the cement that keeps a couple together, and not only for sex

pardon if i veer-off a little - i think it'd be nice for couples to have separate sinks in their bathroom ... (see L Word, bette and tina's beautiful bathroom!). as for separate beds, i believe it's very personal and if two agree to 'sleep different ways' and if it keeps their relationship healthy, why not? once in a while it's nice to sleep 'apart' and 'miss' each other. separate bedrooms? now that's a bit too extreme...
